  19. This Group will study and review the issues involved with netnews
  20. transport over the Internet.  Originally released as an RFC in
  21. February of 1986, NNTP is one of the widest implementations of an
  22. elective status protocol.  As of this writing, the protocol has just
  23. passed its fifth birthday, not having been updated once.
  24.  
  25. Over the years several enhancements have been suggested, and several
  26. have even been implemented widely.  The intent of this Working Group 
  27. will be to encode the more popular and plausible enhancements into an
  28. Internet standard.  Included in the initial list of changes to be
  29. considered are the following:
  30.  
  31. (1) User level and site designated authentication methods;
  32. (2) Binary transfer capability;
  33. (3) Minimization of line turnaround; and
  34. (4) Stronger article selection capability.
  35.  
  36. It is expected that public domain software will be released
  37. concurrently with an RFC, demonstrating the protocol enhancements.
